THE
ORIENTAL DRAGON
The dragon is the symbol of the
Chinese. The Chinese Dragon is slightly different from the
dragons found in different parts of the world. The Chinese
Dragon is the motif of the emperor who has the mandate to
rule by Heaven's will. The Son of Heaven 'tien tzu', is related
with the Heavenly Dragon, thought to be the ancestor of the
Yellow Emperor, the ancestor of the Chinese people. Therefore
the Chinese refer themselves proudly as descendants of the
dragon.
To the Chinese, the dragon is a symbol of power. Chinese Dragons
were generally classified into four types. They are the tien-lung,
shen-lung, ti-lung and the fut-lung. The tien-lung or celestial
dragon protected the gods and the palaces. The shen-lung were
the spiritual dragons which controlled the wind and the rain.
The ti-lung or the Earth dragons controlled the rivers and
the waterways on earth. The fut-lung or the underworld dragons,
guarded precious metals buried in the earth.
The
Chinese believed that the dragons originated from China. The
further the dragons traveled away from China, the more toes
they lost. The Chinese Dragons have five toes while the Korean
Dragons have four toes and the Japanese Dragons have three toes
only. In Taoism, the dragon has 117 scales, 81 scales are infused
with yang energy and 36 scales with yin energy to reflect a
dragon's personality. All Chinese Dragons bear this scale pattern
except the great Heavenly Dragon which has all yang energy.
Dragons lay an egg at a time and it takes 1,000 years to hatch
and another 1,500 years for the dragon to be full grown. BE
